A challenge we often face is designing kitchens to suit families with three to four generations, all sharing a common space. Providing a functional space for children, young adults, and grandparents requires an egalitarian approach from our designers. Not only does the kitchen need to be multi-functional, but it has to be dynamic and suitable to create generational kitchens. There are several ways designers can ensure functionality is at the forefront of planning.

Position appliances and fixtures appropriately.

Experts advise planning for convenience and safety when locating kitchen fittings. For example, ovens at the waist or eye level significantly reduce risk compared to ranges closer to ground level. In addition, designers urge customers to leave an area of clear worktop to one side of the oven, allowing for hot plates and dishes to be let down immediately.

Placing multiple different surfaces and workstations throughout the kitchen is imperative in 2022. COVID-19 has seen a dramatic rise in people working from home. This can be accommodated in one of the workspaces if needed. In addition, every station should be able to serve multiple other functions like eating, workspace or a bar.

Bench heights should be incorporated into the design process when designing for different generations. In addition, lower sections should allow for wheelchair accessibility. Finally, these worktops should also feature rounded corners to avoid any accidents.

Generational kitchens | Focus on sociability and tailor it to the needs

There are many tips and tricks to increase sociability in your kitchen. For example, positioning the hob on an island may increase eye contact with guests while cooking. Natural light is crucial in areas designed for socialising. Designers will ensure that natural light is vital in spaces where gatherings occur.
